Okay, if you've never RP'd (roleplayed) before...
It's okay! We won't make fun of you! well... I won't. Can't speak for others But seriously, we won't.
First of all, roleplaying is (and this is my personal definition) when you create a character who, via the message boards here, interacts with the characters made by other people on the site. All roleplaying is done in third-person (i.e., "he said, she said") on this site.
Now, a few slang terms, abbreviations, and general roleplaying terms-to-know...
POV = point of view.
IC = "in character". All roleplaying is done IC. You can post little OOC bits at the end or beginning, if you have a question about the thread or whatever. But not an OOC paragraph! Thank you!
OOC = "out of character". If you're posting out of character, it will probably be in the OOC boards or in a PM.
PM = Personal Message. It's like emails sent from character to character, so you can chat with the other roleplayers OOC.
thread = a thread is where you roleplay. You start a thread (Start New Thread button) in any category of your choice and write between 2-3 paragraphs concerning your character. (i.e., "George walked down the street, pulling his coat closer to keep the wind out." etc etc etc.) Someone will (or should) join your thread with their character. Most people end their threads with seeing someone coming toward them down the street, or banging into someone, etc.
posting = responding to a thread.
god-modding = where you control another person's character. THIS IS NOT ALLOWED. An example of god-modding would be "George walked down the street, slipped on an icy patch, and knocked someone over. The person let out a shriek and toppled to the ground, their belongings flying every which way." You don't know if the other character would be knocked over, or just brushed aside, or if they were carrying anything that could be disturbed. So don't god-mode. Thanks.
And I think that's it, so that's your lesson in roleplaying for the day.
